The Scoop
The Melrose cafe opened in 1994 as Urth's second, three years after the Manhattan Beach original, and it is the one that turned the brand into a Los Angeles institution. Doors open at 7 am every day and stay open to 10 pm, later on Friday and Saturday. Melrose is where we would take somebody who has never had Urth's matcha, purely because the room has had thirty years to become itself. Everything on the matcha list is here, from the plain Matcha Shot through the Japanese Matcha Latté and the Matcha Macchiato, and the Rising Sun Matcha Latté layers matcha over espresso for anyone who wants both. All of it is ceremonial grade Wazuka matcha harvested for Urth alone on Akihiro Nakai's Entsu Estate. The Monkey Granita and the Organic Rising Sun Matcha Boba are the ones to order if the afternoon is warm.
