The Scoop
Urth South Bay opened on West 147th Street as a homecoming, a few minutes from the Manhattan Beach storefront where Jilla and Shallom Berkman started the whole thing in 1991. It shares the site with Urth's roasting facility and bakery, so the coffee poured here is roasted here. The detail we love is what Shallom said at the groundbreaking: for four years the couple took the Rosecrans exit off the 405 past this exact spot on the drive to that first 300 square foot cafe, and at night they would splurge on the Subway that still stands in the complex next door. The matcha is the Wazuka Cha from the Entsu Estate, ceremonial grade and exclusive to Urth. Hours run 7 am to 10 pm Sunday through Friday and to 11 pm on Saturday.
